Week 23

I hope everyone has had a wonderful weekend! I enjoyed relaxing after a busy week at school and ending our week with the 100th day of school. We read 100th day stories, spelled 100 words and shared our 100 item collections. 

In other exciting news, we have earned our class fish that we have been working towards! I was so proud of our scholars that I told them they have earned two fish. Our new members of our 1C family will be joining us Monday morning and we will hopefully have names for them shortly. 

We are looking forward to field day next week and many other learning opportunities!

*Great Hearts Day;A Day for Friendship: Wednesday, February 14th is Great Hearts Day! We have reserved this special day to focus on the virtue of friendship and celebrate the traits that make a great-hearted student. Teachers are planning interactive and fun activities centered around these topics, and time will be set aside for students to create hand-made Great Hearts Day cards for their classmates.  Archway Arete strives to cultivate a rich, academic environment rooted in the classical tradition. This many times requires popular culture to be left at the door. On that note, students will not be permitted to bring store-bought valentines, candy, or gifts to school. Thank you for partnering with us.

Academics

Literature:  We will finish our last fairy tale, The Frog Prince, on Monday.  We will review and compare all the fairy tales we have read as well as take a fairy tale assessment on Wednesday.

Writing:  Students will be able to understand the basic conventions of a proper sentence and rewrite a model sentence.  We will read and write about sections of  "Winnie-The-Pooh" by A.A. Milne and "The Light Princess" by George Macdonald. 

Grammar:  This week we will finish up our unit on action, being, and linking verbs. Students have learned that action verbs tell what we do, being verbs show what we are, and linking verbs can connect two words in a sentence together, such as a subject and a describing word. We will take a unit assessment on Wednesday. 

Spalding:  Due to athletic field day this week, we will only have 19 words this week. We will take our spelling test on Thursday. 

Math: This week we will continue to learn how to count and work with bigger numbers up to 40. We will count within 40 by making ten first. We will also practice comparing and ordering numbers up to 40. 

History: We will learn about the importance of Machu Picchu as we finish our unit on early civilizations.  We will review and take an assessment on Wednesday.  A review sheet will be sent home on Monday to help students prepare.

Science:  We are moving onto the Circulatory System this week! Students will learn the proper way to take their pulse as well as the different nutrients that flow through our circulatory system. We will see

This past week has been busy and full of excitement! Our scholars had a fantastic time at the Arizona Science Center experiencing the planetarium and quite a few other exhibits. Thank you to all of our wonderful chaperones for supporting us on this day full of learning and wonder!

Academics

Literature:  This week we will continue to enjoy the genre of fairy tales as we read and respond to Puss and Boots, Jack and the Beanstalk and The Princess and the Pea. Students will also use these stories to help them practice the skill of making predictions.

Writing:  Students will be able to understand the basic conventions of a proper sentence and rewrite a model sentence.  We will read sections of "The Reluctant Dragon" by Kenneth Grahame and "Winnie-The-Pooh" by A.A. Milne. 

Grammar:  We will continue to review action verbs and linking verbs. We will also learn about a third type of verb this week called the linking verb. A linking verb connects two words in a sentence together, such as a noun and a describing word: Ben ishungry. Examples of linking verbs are: Am, is, are, was, and were. 

Math: On Monday we will take our unit 12 test on graphing. Before we take the test we will spend ample time together as a class reviewing. Throughout the rest of the week we will begin learning about and using bigger numbers, through 40 and beyond! We will count within 40 by making tens first and we will compare and order numbers based on their size. 

History: We will continue our ancient civilizations unit as we study the Aztec and Inca cultures.

Science:  This week our scholars are moving on to an exciting part of our body, the Digestive system! Students will be able to describe the functions of the digestive system and complete a fun experiment in which we will use crackers to see how this system works. Scholars will also be able to see an interactive version of the digestive system at work!

Quarter 3 Week 21

Hello 1C! It was a wonderful week to begin our 3rd quarter back at school! It has been a pleasure and oh so fun getting to know my new class. We have gotten right back into the swing of things and are working hard. 1st grade is looking forward to our field trip this week, I cannot wait to spend quality time with our scholars at the Science Center!

*Important Field Trip Information: Our field trip is THIS Friday, 1/19.  Please ensure that:

-Your child brings their sweater, a disposable water bottle labeled with their name, and a completely disposable sack lunch labeled with their name.

-Your child wears their uniform and appropriate shoes for walking.

-Your child arrives to school on time.  We will be leaving by 8:15am and arriving back to school approximately by 2pm.

Math: This week in math we will practice collecting data and creating graphs. We will also learn how to interpret data represented on a picture graph. We will continue to practice our addition and subtraction skills during math centers on Wednesday

History: This week we will begin to explore the culture of the Aztecs. On Wednesday, we will learn about the daily life of this ancient culture and how they decided on where to settle.

Science:  This week we are moving onto the muscular system! We will be able to describe the two main functions of the muscular system and well as different types of muscles. We will put together a magnetic human body to get an in depth look at the different muscles we have. The scholars will also work on sorting muscles into different groups.

Quarter 3 Week 20

Welcome back 1C Family! I hope everyone had a restful, relaxing and fun break! I enjoyed spending time with my little family and not waking up quite as early. I am ready to begin the the new year with my 1C family and look forward to creating memories with our sweet scholars. As we begin this time of transition please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions you may have. We are going to hit the ground running in pursuit of truth, beauty and goodness!

Math: This week we will practice comparing numbers within 20 and identifying numbers that are "more than" and "less than". We will solve problems by using addition and subtraction and compare our answers to see which is "smallest" or "greatest"

History: This week in history we will be studying the ancient culture of the Maya.  We will learn about the cities they built in the rainforest, their ancient writings and other aspects of their everyday culture.

Science:  We are getting right back to work this week and beginning our unit on The Human Body! We will explore our skeletal system, learning about bones, what happens when we break them and how we can keep our bones healthy and strong! We will use short stories as well as funny in class activities and demonstrations to discover the excitement that is our skeletal system.

Week 19

Wow, I can't believe that we are wrapping up the first half of first grade this week! I have really enjoyed my time in 1C this year, and these last few weeks have really flown by. This class has been very hardworking, respectful, and excited to learn, and I will miss them. It has been wonderful to see all of the growth that our scholars have made so far and I can't wait to hear about how they do in the spring from Mrs. Chilson and Ms. Kaye. 

I hope that you all have a relaxing weekend and that everyone who has not been feeling well recovers quickly.

  

Thank you for a wonderful baby gift. The classical literature board books are a great addition to her library! 

World Religions Celebration: This Wednesday, our first grade scholars will rotate through all of the first grade classrooms to celebrate what we have learned about Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. We will be completing arts and crafts, playing games, and having snacks. If you would like to help out with the activities in our classroom you can sign up here.

Class Book Exchange: After our celebration on Wednesday, we will have a class book exchange! Please have your child bring a new or gently used book (non-pop culture) to school. Please wrap the book and try to choose a book that would be enjoyed by both boys and girls.  Thank you!

Field Trip: Our field trip to the Arizona Science Center will be January 19th!  We will leave at 8:30 and return at 2:00. Students will bring a lunch and we will eat at the Science Center. We will also see a Grand Tour of the Solar System at the Planetarium. We will accept the first five parents who would like to volunteer to be chaperones. Send me an email if you would like to help!  Permission slips were sent home today.

This week:  Monday will be a full day of school and Tuesday and Wednesday will be half days. Please send a grocery bag to school with your child this week. On Wednesday, we will put everything from his or her desk into one bag and hang it in the back of the classroom so that the room can be thoroughly cleaned over break. Reusable bags work great for this!

Coming up in 1C:

Literature: 

This week we will finish our Frog and Toad unit with an assessment on Monday.  Tuesday and Wednesday we will read stories about Br’er Rabbit.

Spalding: 

We will be reviewing and practicing important aspects of Spalding. We will practice handwriting, challenging phonograms, frequently used rules and markings, and active participation in every lesson. Homework will be handwriting practice and we will not have a spelling test this week.

Writing: 

We will be reading excerpts from The Railway Children.  Students will listen to passages and retell important details from the story.  We will also work on basic conventions of a proper sentence and rewrite model sentences.

Math: 

We will review addition and subtraction facts and strategies for problem solving.

History: 

This week we review what we have learned about Mexico and will finish by making our very own piñata!

Science: 

This week we will take a short quiz to check to for understanding of solids, liquids, and gases. Then, we will review the scientific method with a candy cane experiment! We will predict what will happen if we put candy canes in cups of vinegar, warm water, and cold water. After the experiment we will make observations about the effect of vinegar, warm water, and cold water on the candy canes.

Week 18

We had a great week of learning in 1C! Ask your child about the differences between a balloon with water and a balloon with ice in it. Also ask him or her what happened to the balloon when we mixed vinegar and baking soda.

Math: This week we will go back in time and begin reviewing the math content from the very beginning of the year. We will review all that has been learned from shapes to counting and subtraction to measurement. We will have a final units 1-10 cumulative review before break. 

History: In history, we will learn about how Mexico gained their independence from Spain.  On Wednesday, we will discover the ancient Bering Strait which led people from Asia to the Americas. On Friday, we will learn about hunters and gatherers and how farming led to the development of cities.

Science:  This week we will continue to learn about matter by learning about changes in states of matter. We will complete some interesting experiments in order to observe melting, freezing, evaporation, and condensation.
