Homework: Thank you
to everyone who filled out the homework survey. Your feedback is very helpful
for us. Please review homework with your child and check for his or her name, neat
handwriting, correct answers, and proper spelling before it is turned in. Please
reach out if you have questions or if there is anything we can do to help you support your child during homework time.
Read-a-thon: Mark your calendars for our fourth annual
Read-a-thon! This special day will be celebrated on Tuesday, October 31st.
Students have the option to come to school dressed as their favorite classical
literary character, scientist, or historical figure. Costumes need not come
directly from the grade level curriculum, though they must be classically
aligned. Additionally, costumes should allow students to engage in regular
school day activities such as recess, lunch, and P.E., and shouldn’t impede our
instruction. (Violent images or weapons of any kind will not be permitted.) It
is sure to be a full, fun day celebrating the beautiful enjoyment reading
brings!
This week in 1C:
Literature – We will read two versions of the same
story: Little Red Riding Hood, and Lon
Po Po, a story from China. We will discuss and compare the stories.
Spalding – In Spalding, we have 28 words this week. Our
spelling test is on Friday.
Writing – In writing, we have copy work and narration
exercises from Mary Poppins!
Idiom – Practice makes perfect
Math- This week we will begin a new unit on ordinal
position! Students will practice ordering themselves and other items into
positions from 1st to 10th place. Students will also practice positioning
themselves and other things in different ways. For example: on top of, under,
next to, the right of, in front of, etc. We will continue to review addition,
subtraction, and general number sense throughout the week and during math
centers. On Thursday, we will take a cumulative units 1-5 test as well as a
unit 5 quiz on Friday.
History- This week in history we will learn about the
ancient Egyptian Pyramids, Mummies, the Sphinx and Hieroglyphics.
Science – We will begin to study oceans this week! The class
will complete an experiment to see which objects sink and float in fresh and
salt water. We will also demonstrate how currents move through the ocean.
