Week 9


This week we will be wrapping up a wonderful first quarter of first grade! Our scholars have worked hard so far this year and we are so proud of them.

Announcements:

Fall Break- Archway Arete will be on fall break on Monday, October 9- Friday, October 13. Enjoy your week off!

Quarter 1 Conferences- Quarter 1 conferences will be held October 16- October 19. A sign-up genius will be available on Friday, October 6th for you to sign-up for your conference.  We will also have half days this week to accommodate for the conference schedule. It is our goal to have 100% parent attendance. We look forward to meeting with you soon!



Academics

Literature: This week we will be finishing up Owl at Home, as we read the last chapter, “Owl and the Moon”. We will have reading groups again on Tuesday and Thursday. Thank you so much to those of you who came and helped us last week. We couldn’t do it without you!

Spalding: We have 29 words this week and will test on Friday. We will also be working with students 1:1 to quiz phonograms orally (OPR) and see which phonograms need more practice and which ones are mastered!

Writing: Copy work and narration exercises from The Frog Prince.

Poem: The Purple Cow by Gelett Burgess

Idiom: “Practice makes perfect”

History: We are heading to ancient Egypt! We will discover the importance of the Nile river, learn about 

ancient Egyptian daily life and the pharaoh’s role. Have a great day!

Science:  This week we will learn more about the importance of the many plants and animals found in rain forests. We will learn how we can help protect this habitat. We will learn what it means when animals become endangered or extinct. We will also study some common types of dinosaurs and discuss how they may have become extinct.

Math: This week we will wrap up our subtraction unit by reviewing how to "count down" and "take away" numbers. We will take a our unit test on Friday as well as our cumulative units 1-4 test. We will also have a lot of fun with math centers on Wednesday as we explore subtraction and briefly work with skip counting and money!
