Week 27

This week the 1C scholars worked incredibly hard and they are growing so much!  It is so amazing to watch them blossom as the third quarter unfolds.  With just a few weeks of the quarter left, I look forward to seeing this progress continue!



The Chilson's took a day trip to the Grand Canyon this weekend!


Homework

Nightly: read for 15 minutes, phonograms to practice- ee, ou, ow, oo, i, au, aw, e, p, o

Thursday: Read and write all 30 words and workbook Test B and wkbk page 70

Announcements

Sam the Minuteman- We will begin reading Sam the Minuteman the week of March 5th.  Please have your child bring their copy to school. Thank you!

Class SuppliesWith more than half of the school year behind us, we are running a bit low on dry erase markers, and Dixon Ticonderoga No. 2 pencils. Thank you to those who donated Kleenex! We would be grateful for any of these item donations. Thank you!

Academics

Math: This week will be an exciting week in math as students begin learning concepts of multiplication. We will start by creating and identifying equal groups of numbers. For example, 3 groups of 2 dogs makes 6 total dogs. We will have a cumulative test on Friday on units 1-13 that will focus on all concepts learned throughout the year, not including multiplication. 

Poem: We will have the poetry recitation of “The Swing” by Robert Louis Stevenson on Wednesday, February 28th.  Idiom: An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away 

Writing:  Students will be able to understand the basic conventions of a proper sentence and rewrite a model sentence.  We will read and write about sections of "The Velveteen Rabbit" by Margery Williams Bianco and "How to Eat Fried Worms" by Thomas Rockwell. 

Grammar:  We will review all that we have learned this quarter by reading about and working with verbs, nouns, and adjectives.  We will finish our unit on adjectives and will take an assessment on Tuesday. 

Literature: We will read the stories of Anansi.  The week after, we will begin Sam the Minuteman, so please ensure that your child has a copy of the story and brings it to school next week. Thank you!

Science: The week we are beginning a new unit of study in science! We will be diving into the study of different scientists and their biographies. This week we will study Edward Jenner and Louis Pasteur. We will listen to their contributions to science and our world.

History: History: This week we will learn about the Lost Colony, Jamestown and the Pilgrims journey to the New World.

This week we will learn about how Pizarro discovered the New World and defeated the Aztecs. We will also begin to learn about England’s reason for exploration.
