Week 27

This week the 1C scholars worked incredibly hard and they are growing so much!  It is so amazing to watch them blossom as the third quarter unfolds.  With just a few weeks of the quarter left, I look forward to seeing this progress continue!

Academics

Math: This week will be an exciting week in math as students begin learning concepts of multiplication. We will start by creating and identifying equal groups of numbers. For example, 3 groups of 2 dogs makes 6 total dogs. We will have a cumulative test on Friday on units 1-13 that will focus on all concepts learned throughout the year, not including multiplication. 

Poem: We will have the poetry recitation of “The Swing” by Robert Louis Stevenson on Wednesday, February 28^th.  Idiom: An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away 

Writing:  Students will be able to understand the basic conventions of a proper sentence and rewrite a model sentence.  We will read and write about sections of "The Velveteen Rabbit" by Margery Williams Bianco and "How to Eat Fried Worms" by Thomas Rockwell. 

Grammar:  We will review all that we have learned this quarter by reading about and working with verbs, nouns, and adjectives.  We will finish our unit on adjectives and will take an assessment on Tuesday. 

Literature: We will read the stories of Anansi.  The week after, we will begin Sam the Minuteman, so please ensure that your child has a copy of the story and brings it to school next week. Thank you!

Science: The week we are beginning a new unit of study in science! We will be diving into the study of different scientists and their biographies. This week we will study Edward Jenner and Louis Pasteur. We will listen to their contributions to science and our world.

History: History: This week we will learn about the Lost Colony, Jamestown and the Pilgrims journey to the New World.

This week we will learn about how Pizarro discovered the New World and defeated the Aztecs. We will also begin to learn about England’s reason for exploration.

Math: This week we will continue to subtract and add two digit numbers with one digit numbers. We will continue to identify tens and ones in two digit numbers. We will also learn how to add three one digit numbers and practice counting forward and backwards by twos in an effort to prepare ourselves for learning multiplication later on this quarter.

Week 25

I apologize for my absence this week, my daughter Charlotte had a procedure earlier in the week and then was diagnosed with the flu. We are on the mend and ready for a wonderful week!  I hope you and your scholars enjoyed the long weekend! The Archway Arete staff enjoyed a day of professional development and concluded the day by watching a Shakespeare performance!

We are looking forward to the week ahead and celebrating the virtue of friendship on Wednesday!

Great Hearts Day;A Day for Friendship: Wednesday, February 14th is Great Hearts Day! We have reserved this special day to focus on the virtue of friendship and celebrate the traits that make a great-hearted student. Archway Arete strives to cultivate a rich, academic environment rooted in the classical tradition. This many times requires popular culture to be left at the door. On that note, students will not be permitted to bring store-bought valentines, candy, or gifts to school. *Our class celebration will take place from 11:50-1:00. Week 24

Happy Monday, I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend! We enjoyed the beautiful weather and had a fun filled Sunday with a birthday party and the Superbowl. 

Charlotte fell in love with the trampoline this weekend! 

Field day was a huge success!  Thank you to all the parents who donated items and joined us for this amazing day! Students showed great sportsmanship and tried their very best. Way to go 1C Argos!

We have a quieter, shorter week next week and we are looking forward to Great Hearts day later this month.

Grammar:  This week we will start a new unit on adjectives! Adjectives are words that describe a noun. Students will practice identifying and using different describing words in sentences. Students will draw descriptive pictures and identify the unique details of their pictures in order to create their own adjectives. 

Literature: We are excited to begin reading “A Bargain for Frances” this week.  Students will practice their reading skills and fluency while practicing comprehension skills.  Please ensure that your child has brought in their copy of this book to use in class.

Spalding:  Since we have no school on Friday, there will only be 20 words and students will take their spelling test on Thursday.

History: This week we will begin our unit on early explorers.  Our first explorer that we will discover is Christopher Columbus.

Week 23

I hope everyone has had a wonderful weekend! I enjoyed relaxing after a busy week at school and ending our week with the 100th day of school. We read 100th day stories, spelled 100 words and shared our 100 item collections. 

In other exciting news, we have earned our class fish that we have been working towards! I was so proud of our scholars that I told them they have earned two fish. Our new members of our 1C family will be joining us Monday morning and we will hopefully have names for them shortly. 

We are looking forward to field day next week and many other learning opportunities!

Grammar:  This week we will finish up our unit on action, being, and linking verbs. Students have learned that action verbs tell what we do, being verbs show what we are, and linking verbs can connect two words in a sentence together, such as a subject and a describing word. We will take a unit assessment on Wednesday. 

Spalding:  Due to athletic field day this week, we will only have 19 words this week. We will take our spelling test on Thursday. 

Math: This week we will continue to learn how to count and work with bigger numbers up to 40. We will count within 40 by making ten first. We will also practice comparing and ordering numbers up to 40. 

History: We will learn about the importance of Machu Picchu as we finish our unit on early civilizations.  We will review and take an assessment on Wednesday.  A review sheet will be sent home on Monday to help students prepare.

Science:  We are moving onto the Circulatory System this week! Students will learn the proper way to take their pulse as well as the different nutrients that flow through our circulatory system. We will see

This past week has been busy and full of excitement! Our scholars had a fantastic time at the Arizona Science Center experiencing the planetarium and quite a few other exhibits. Thank you to all of our wonderful chaperones for supporting us on this day full of learning and wonder!

Academics

Literature:  This week we will continue to enjoy the genre of fairy tales as we read and respond to Puss and Boots, Jack and the Beanstalk and The Princess and the Pea. Students will also use these stories to help them practice the skill of making predictions.

Writing:  Students will be able to understand the basic conventions of a proper sentence and rewrite a model sentence.  We will read sections of "The Reluctant Dragon" by Kenneth Grahame and "Winnie-The-Pooh" by A.A. Milne. 

Grammar:  We will continue to review action verbs and linking verbs. We will also learn about a third type of verb this week called the linking verb. A linking verb connects two words in a sentence together, such as a noun and a describing word: Ben ishungry. Examples of linking verbs are: Am, is, are, was, and were. 

Math: On Monday we will take our unit 12 test on graphing. Before we take the test we will spend ample time together as a class reviewing. Throughout the rest of the week we will begin learning about and using bigger numbers, through 40 and beyond! We will count within 40 by making tens first and we will compare and order numbers based on their size. 

History: We will continue our ancient civilizations unit as we study the Aztec and Inca cultures.

Science:  This week our scholars are moving on to an exciting part of our body, the Digestive system! Students will be able to describe the functions of the digestive system and complete a fun experiment in which we will use crackers to see how this system works. Scholars will also be able to see an interactive version of the digestive system at work!
