Week 32

Happy Monday!  We are looking forward to expanding the truth, beauty and goodness of all things this week. We are particularly excited about fine arts and French night on Wednesday. We hope to see you there!

Academics

Math: This week in math we will begin learning all about clocks and how to tell time! Students will practice telling time on the hour and at half past the hour. Students will also work to sequence events according to time and will be able to recognize what events take place at certain times throughout the day (i.e. morning or night).

Writing:   Students will be able to understand the basic conventions of a proper sentence and rewrite a model sentence. We will read and write about sections from Little House on the Prairie and On the Banks of Plum Creek by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Students will be able to understand the basic conventions of a proper sentence and rewrite a model sentence. 

Grammar:  This week we will review nouns, adjectives, verbs, and adverbs and we can use them and identify them within sentences.

LiteratureWe will finish our folktales around the world unit by reading “The Knee High Man” and taking a quiz on Wednesday.  We will finish the week by reading a selection from Winnie the Pooh on Friday

Science: This week students will describe the movement of Earth around the sun, and the moon around Earth and list and describe objects in our solar system.

History: We will finish our unit on the American Revolution by learning about American symbols and our nation’s Capital.  We will take a unit test on Friday.  A review sheet will be sent home on Monday.

This week flew by and now we are all off to enjoy a nice, long weekend!  The coming weeks are getting busier but we will continue to seek the truth, beauty and goodness in all that we learn and do!

Math: This week we will begin a new unit on fraction concepts. We will practice breaking things into "halves" and "fourths" and creating and identifying patterns. We will continue to review addition and subtraction concepts from previous units.

Poem: Rope Rhyme Idiom: Land of Nod

Writing:   Students will be able to understand the basic conventions of a proper sentence and rewrite a model sentence. We will read and write about sections from A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. Students will be able to understand the basic conventions of a proper sentence and rewrite a model sentence.

Grammar:  We will begin learning about articles this week. The articles "a", "an", and "the" are used in sentences to help the nouns. "A" is almost always used before consonants and "An" before vowels.

MathThis week we will begin a new unit in math! We will start learning about concepts of division by practicing separating items into equal groups. For example, when given 10 m&m's, how can two friends each end up with the same amount so that they share equally and fairly?

Writing:  Students will be able to understand the basic conventions of a proper sentence and rewrite a model sentence. We will read and write about sections of The Tale of Benjamin Bunny by Beatrix Potter. We will review abbreviations and how to use them in a sentence.

Grammar:  We will continue to learn about adverbs and how they help us describe "when", "where", and "how" something can happen.

Weekly Fluency Passages: We have begun sending home weekly fluency passages on Monday night.  Please have your child read this passage each night for one minute and record the amount of words read on the back of the sheet. Please have your child return the passage on Friday. Weekly fluency passages are a great way to improve reading ability and reading fluency!

Academics

Math: This week we will write number sentences and create number and picture stories for multiplication problems. We will continue to learn about the concept of equal groups and solve repeated addition and multiplication problems. 

Poem: Sing a song of People by Lois Lenski   Idiom: A.M., P.M.

Writing:  Students will be able to understand the basic conventions of a proper sentence and rewrite a model sentence.  We will read and write about sections of "How to Eat Fried Worms" by Thomas Rockwell and "The Happy Hollisters" by Jerry West.

Grammar:  We will review how to write in complete sentences using appropriate punctuation, grammar, and handwriting. We will take an assessment of all 70 phonograms. 

Literature: We will read “Sam the Minuteman”. We will explore the genre of historical fiction and prepare ourselves for our next history unit as we read this selection. Please ensure that your child brings their copy of this book to school.

History: This week we will continue to learn about the early colonists as we touch on the use of slaves and the Puritan colonies.  We will review and take an assessment on Friday.  A review guide will be sent home on Monday.

Week 27

This week the 1C scholars worked incredibly hard and they are growing so much!  It is so amazing to watch them blossom as the third quarter unfolds.  With just a few weeks of the quarter left, I look forward to seeing this progress continue!

Academics

Math: This week will be an exciting week in math as students begin learning concepts of multiplication. We will start by creating and identifying equal groups of numbers. For example, 3 groups of 2 dogs makes 6 total dogs. We will have a cumulative test on Friday on units 1-13 that will focus on all concepts learned throughout the year, not including multiplication. 

Poem: We will have the poetry recitation of “The Swing” by Robert Louis Stevenson on Wednesday, February 28th.  Idiom: An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away 

Writing:  Students will be able to understand the basic conventions of a proper sentence and rewrite a model sentence.  We will read and write about sections of "The Velveteen Rabbit" by Margery Williams Bianco and "How to Eat Fried Worms" by Thomas Rockwell. 

Grammar:  We will review all that we have learned this quarter by reading about and working with verbs, nouns, and adjectives.  We will finish our unit on adjectives and will take an assessment on Tuesday. 

Literature: We will read the stories of Anansi.  The week after, we will begin Sam the Minuteman, so please ensure that your child has a copy of the story and brings it to school next week. Thank you!

Hello 1C Family,

We will also learn how to add three one digit numbers and practice counting forward and backwards by twos in an effort to prepare ourselves for learning multiplication later on this quarter.
